With the second full week of November, I have decided to focus on spells. This starts with the of course starts with today’s post, the Animated Spellbook. The rest of the week will be a surprise. Come back Wednesday and Friday to see them. Well until then enjoy today’s monster, now go give your players some paper cuts.
Lore
Books eons ago, were left to rot in the wizard towers, crypts, and libraries. But these books, no spellbooks, did not. Unlike the regular leather and paper that surrounded them, they did not rot. They instead came alive, animated, into something that could express its will through magic.
“Natural” Born: Animated Spellbooks are creatures that come about on their own. They arose from the magic embedded in them and that swirled around them. Not all spellbooks come to be animated, but those that do seem to have been left in areas scarred by magic, or at least areas with large concentrations of magic.
Power-Scaled: No matter the material that once dotted the pages of these books, they almost all awaken with a certain level of power. Those of apprentice mages are strengthened and those of archmages weakened. Some believe that a certain level of magic is needed to awaken a book and once that threshold is met a spellbook will animate unless interfered with.
