Drop-In NPC: Avalan, The Ice Sorceress

When I was creating this NPC, I was thinking what to do to make her unique. I came to the conclusion that I need to make an Ice Elemental that cares about more than their territory. I decided on knowledge. I like the idea that you will see later in the post, that you could trade knowledge for safe passage. Those are just some general thoughts I had, so go read about Avalan now. Also, it is pronounced like Evelyn but with an A instead of an E, if you were curious.

Introduction

A sorceress is a magic-wielder that was blessed with magic from birth, well what’s a more magical birth than being created from a combination of magical energies. That what Avalan is, an Ice Elemental born from the energies of ice and snow. She took a step further than others and learned the magical arts using her naturae to her advantage.

Info

  • Appearance:
    • General: Like most other Ice Elementals, Avalan takes the shape of a snake. What differentiates her from the other elementals though is her unique purple coloration. She has a blue exterior, like other Ice Elementals, but inside is a strip of purple ice that flows through her entire body. She also has light purple eyes instead of the more common yellow ones.
  • Personality: Avalan cares about two things, her territory and knowledge. She does not care for anything that does not involve either of these things, and if it involves both, well, be ready to listen for a couple of hours about it.
  • Quirk: Instead of killing the creatures that trespass into her territory, Avalan will instead take knowledge in the place of their lifes. She prefers it to be magical in nature, but if it is interesting enough, she will let it pass if it is not magical.
  • History: Avalan was born in the Place of Ice from the snow and ice of the world of cold.
    • Territory: Avalan spent her first century doing what any Ice Elemental does, protect its territory. She fought other Ice Elementals that formed near her and any other creature unlucky enough to cross her territorial lines.
    • Wizard Tower: While traveling through her territory, Avalan came across something that she never did before, a tower. Within the tower were what she would later come to understand were spellbooks. One of the books was written in her language, Aquan. After reading it she came to find her other passion, knowledge.
    • Returning Owner: When the owner of the tower returned, he was terrified at the large creature, but after Avalan started a spiel about the magical properties of ice, he was more bewildered. The two became friends and the wizard taught her how to speak most languages and how to cast spells related to her nature.
    • Knowledge Seeker: Avalan now seeks the knowledge that others can give her and makes sure to demand of such when they cross her territory.

Drop-In

Ice Elementals are very territorial and therefore you won’t find Avalan outside of her territory, but that does not mean that you can’t move her territory. You could have her territory in the Plane of Ice or some place on the Material Plane that is cold enough all year around. If you really want to stretch it, you could say that she uses her powers to make a place of ice, and that could be her territory. Any of these would work for your players to come across The Ice Sorceress.

Plot Hooks

Avalan is always seeking knowledge, especially magical, but she will not leave her territory. Because of this some possible quests she could give are:

  • Seek down some magical item or spell that she heard about but is unable to track down, due to being stuck to her territory.
  • Catch someone that stole a book of magic that she had not finished reading yet.
