Drop-In NPC: Mavas, The Warlus Tamer

I hope you are having a good Wednesday, because I am not. This post is the only thing that I will be doing today that is fun, so I hope you enjoy. Sorry for the personal information, but I needed to get it off my chest. So, for this post I have a trainer of the Warlus that were found in the post on Monday. The NPC is a Triton and uses a good amount of their lore, so if you are confused go check that lore out, it can be found within Volo’s Guide, at least that’s where I got it from.

Introduction

Surrounded by walruses of various sizes a scale armored Triton can be found holding the reins of such creatures. Unlike the normal walruses of the Arctic, these seem to be ready to fight at a moment’s notice, and with those sharpened tusks, they are ready for it. Mavas, the Triton stands in the center of these walruses, these Warluses, proud of the protectors he has tamed.

Info

  • Appearance:
    • General: Mavas is a middle-aged Triton, around 95, and is found with the pale blue skin of his race. He is found with dirty blond hair that he holds in a small bun at the back of his head.
    • Clothes: Dressed in the scale armor of the Tritons, Mavas, never wears anything else. The armor is damaged from the many accidents that occur while training the Warlus. The only time he takes off the battered and damaged armor is when he takes the time to wash it, in that case he can be found dressed in a tunic and pants made of seaweed.
  • Personality: Mavas shares a lot of the views of his race about the surface folk. He acts as if their problems do not matter compared to the battles of the deep. He also acts as if surface folk should also respect him for his battles. But underneath it all is a man that cares for the world he has come to protect and the creatures he raises to protect it.
  • Quirk: Unlike the others of his race, Mavas prefers the ice-cold wind and ground of the Arctic surface.
  • History:
    • Birth: Mavas was born in the home plane of the Triton, the Plane of Water. He was born the son of one of the many Triton that volunteered to travel to the Material Plane to defeat the monsters that traveled there.
    • Plane-Hopping: After coming of age, Mavas traveled to the Material Plane to meet his father and to protect the Material Plane as well.
    • Surface-Travel: After 30 years of battle, Mavas finally saw the surface that he was protecting with his father and the other Triton. He felt the white ice touch his skin and the ice cold wind of the arctic and fell in love. He traveled across this place and eventually came across humans training a species that he saw in the waters, the walrus.
    • Warlus Training: Intrigued in the training of these creatures, he took up the training as well. With the ability of the Triton, he did not need to steal the creatures, unlike the surface folk. He also decided that the armor the surface folk made them wear would be useless against the creatures of the deep, and that stealth would be better. He now trains these creatures for the Tritons’ battles against the creatures of the deep.

Drop-In

Mavas is traditionally found within the Arctic, where the most walruses can be found, but you could make it to where he is found anywhere near the sea. It could be argued that your players came across him during one of his travels to gather resources for his training.

Plot Hooks

Mavas, like most Triton, believes himself to be a protector of the sea and therefore deserves much respect. This means that he does not need the help of surface folk with anything of great importance, but he may ask for help with some minor matters. This could include the following:

  • Help Mavas find a lost group of calves that were lost during a snowstorm.
  • Defeat a group of polar bears that have been harassing the smaller of Mavas’s Warlus.
