Homebrew Monster: Core Coin & Coin Golem

Today I have creature that can mess with the money pouch of your adventurers. Ever needed your players wo be motivated, drop one of these guys in and tell them that they need to remove 100 gold from the character sheet, that should get them going. I hope you, and especially your players, have fun with the Core Coin and Coin Golem.

Lore

A Core Coin is a regular gold coin that gained sentience with the help of the magical influence of a dragon onto its horde. Despite being created from the magic of a creature that desires to store and gather wealth, the Core Coin instead wants to consume it. Unable to destroy even one gold coin the dragon banishes the coin from its horde, causing the coin to traverse the world to gather and consume the coins of those unlucky enough to cross it.

Strange Appetite: Despite having no known reason to consume food to survive the Core Coin does it anyway. The food of its choice are the coins of the world. It attracts nearby coins and after finding a peaceful place it slowly absorbs the coins. Some scholars believe that the consummation of these coins has some effect on the monster and may lead to something if they consume enough.

Defense Mechanism: To ensure that it can absorb the coins, the Core Coin while attracting coins is able to control them. The people that have come into contact with this have decided to call this defense mechanism a Coin Golem. The strength of this Coin Golem is dependent on the number of coins at the Core Coin’s disposal. After securing the wealth of the people it attacked, the monster flees to absorb the coins.

100 Gold Limit: A Core Coin seems to be able to only manipulate 100 coins total. While it is able to constantly absorb more to reach this limit, the second it does it stops attracting even if surrounded by coins. It has been hypothesized that two Core Coins could combine their strength to absorb and form a stronger Coin Golem, but two Core Coins have never been seen in the same place.

Notes

  • While the Core Coin has a statblock I would suggest that you have it attract coins before combat starts, so that it does not die in one hit because it didn’t go first.
  • Also, the lore states that the Core Coin is a gold coin, but you could easily have it be another type of coin.
